Buried in the news of Tuesday's presidential primaries was the news that the city of Portland, Oregon
elected its first openly gay mayor. Sam Adams won a landslide victory over 12 challengers, 59% to 33% for his closest competitor.
Andy Towle reports that Adams' victory makes him the only gay mayor of a top 40 U.S. city.
From
the Oregonian:
Adams, 44, won by stressing specifics: He promised to work with school leaders to cut the dropout rate, make Portland a leader in environmentally friendly businesses and use the Portland Streetcar and better planning to spur urban renewal.
