California Assemblyman Lloyd Levine (Democrat-Van Nuys) has introduced a bill that would ban the sale of incandescent light bulbs (the old, everyday kind we grew up with) by 2012. If Californians switched completely to the newer compact fluorescent bulbs, it would save as much carbon dioxide as shutting down one or two gas-fired power plants or removing 400,000 cars from the road.
A spokesman for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said the governor had not seen the bill and has no stance on it.
