Which Election Was It?

With the Labor Day weekend past us and the presidential campaign in full swing, I thought I would start a new series regarding elections past. On occasion, between now and Election Day, I will post an electoral map from a previous presidential election. I'll list clues about each particular election, but won't list the candidates. Your job is to guess the election. I'll post the answer to each the following day.

First up...the election that marked the last gasp of the old Democratic South. No candidate of the Democratic Party has won such a large number of southern states since this contest between a sitting president and a challenger who ran as a reformer in the wake of a major government scandal.

Which election was it?

Democrat (blue states): 297 electoral votes
Republican (red states): 240 electoral votes
