A former Republican president, who had left the White House four years earlier after turning the keys over to his Republican successor, tried to regain the presidency by challenging the incumbent for their party's nomination. Failing in that effort, the former chief executive mounted a major third party challenge which resulted in one of the most exciting elections in U.S. history.
On Election Day the third party candidacy of this former president actually came in second place in both the popular vote and in the Electoral College, causing an embarrassing third-place finish for the Republican ticket.
The Democrats won a landslide victory:
Democrat (blue states): 435 electoral votes
Third Party (yellow states): 88 electoral votes
Republican (red states): 8 electoral votes
